Most herbs live fast and die young. Basil lasts a season. Coriander bolts and disappears. Mint needs managing constantly.
Rosemary is different.
Plant it once ā from a single cutting no bigger than your finger ā and it stays with you for years. Quietly growing. Getting bigger and woodier and more fragrant every season. Asking for almost nothing except sun and the occasional drink of water.
It smells like Mediterranean hillsides and Sunday roasts and something ancient and medicinal all at once. And every time you brush past it or snap off a sprig for cooking, it releases that smell into your kitchen and you remember exactly why you planted it.
Here is how to grow it properly.
What Is Rosemary Called Around the World?
| Region | Local Name |
|---|---|
| šµš° Pakistan / Urdu | Ų§Ś©ŁŪŁ Ų§ŁŲ¬ŲØŁ (Ikhlil ul Jabal) / Ų±ŁŲ²Ł ŪŲ±Ū |
| šøš¦ Arabic | Ų„ŁŁŁŁ Ų§ŁŲ¬ŲØŁ (Ikleel al-Jabal) |
| š®š³ Hindi | ą¤°ą„ą¤ą¤¼ą¤®ą„ą¤°ą„ (Rosemary) / ą¤ą„ą¤²ą¤®ą„ą¤ą¤¹ą¤¦ą„ |
| š®š· Persian / Farsi | Ų±Ų²Ł Ų§Ų±Ū (Rozmari) |
| š«š· French | Romarin |
| š®š¹ Italy | Rosmarino |
| šŖšø Spain | Romero |
| š Scientific | Salvia rosmarinus (formerly Rosmarinus officinalis) |
šæ In Arabic and Urdu, rosemary is called Ikhlil ul Jabal ā meaning "Crown of the Mountain." It has been used in Islamic and Unani medicine for centuries for memory, hair growth, and circulation. It is not a foreign herb at all.
Why Rosemary Deserves a Permanent Spot in Your Home
š§ Sharpens Memory and Focus ā This is not folk wisdom. Studies from Northumbria University found that simply being in a room diffused with rosemary aroma improved memory performance by up to 75%. Students in Pakistan should have this on their study desk. No joke.
š Grows Hair Faster Than Minoxidil ā A 2023 clinical study published in JAMA compared rosemary oil to 2% minoxidil (the active ingredient in most hair growth products) and found rosemary oil equally effective for hair regrowth ā with fewer side effects. Massage diluted rosemary oil into your scalp twice a week and feel the difference in 3 months.
š Transforms Your Cooking ā Rosemary with roasted chicken, lamb, potatoes, bread. One fresh sprig does what no dried packet ever can. It is the difference between food that tastes cooked and food that tastes made.
š“ Improves Sleep Quality ā Rosemary aromatherapy reduces cortisol ā the stress hormone ā before bed. A small pot on your nightstand works quietly while you sleep.
š¦ Natural Insect Repellent ā The strong camphor fragrance repels mosquitoes, moths, and flies. Far more pleasant than chemical sprays.
šæ Lives for Decades ā Unlike most herbs that last one season, a well-cared-for rosemary plant can live 10 to 15 years. It becomes a proper woody shrub over time. One of the best long-term investments in your home.
š° One Cutting Costs Almost Nothing ā A single 10 cm cutting from a friend's plant or a supermarket pot gives you a rosemary plant that will outlast most houseplants you have ever owned.
Best Rosemary Varieties to Grow
| Variety | Height | Shape | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tuscan Blue | 120ā150 cm | Upright | Cooking, hedging, statement plant |
| Prostrate / Creeping | 30ā45 cm | Trailing, low | Hanging baskets, wall edges |
| Arp | 90ā120 cm | Upright | Most cold tolerant ā good for northern Pakistan |
| Miss Jessopp's Upright | 100ā130 cm | Tall, formal | Large pots, borders |
| Dwarf / Compact | 40ā60 cm | Rounded, bushy | Windowsill pots, small balconies |
š” For windowsills and balcony pots in Pakistan ā Dwarf Compact or Prostrate varieties are ideal. Upright varieties like Tuscan Blue are stunning but need a large pot and plenty of vertical space.
Step 01 ā Get a Cutting the Right Way

The best way to start rosemary ā and the cheapest ā is from a stem cutting. Go to a supermarket, buy one of those small fresh rosemary pots they sell for cooking, and take your cutting from there. Or ask a neighbour. Rosemary plants produce far more stems than anyone ever uses.
Choose a non-flowering stem ā one that is actively green and growing, not one with flowers or buds on it. Flowering stems root very poorly. Cut a piece 10ā15 cm long just below a leaf node using clean scissors.
Now strip the bottom 4ā5 cm of leaves completely ā those small needle-like leaves pulled cleanly off the stem. You want bare stem at the bottom that can contact soil or water and produce roots.
If you have rooting hormone powder ā dip the stripped end in it before planting. It speeds rooting significantly. If not, plain works fine ā just takes a little longer.
āļø Take 3ā4 cuttings at once. Rosemary can be unpredictable with rooting. Some cuttings take easily, some do not. Having several gives you the best chance of success.
Step 02 ā Root in Water or Soil

You have two options and both work ā but they have different timelines.
In Water (watch the roots grow)
Place stripped cuttings in a glass of water ā just enough to submerge the bare stem, 3ā4 cm deep. Keep leaves well above the waterline. Place on a bright windowsill out of direct harsh sun. Change water every 4ā5 days. Roots appear in 3ā5 weeks ā rosemary is slower than most herbs to root.
In Soil (more reliable long term)
Fill a small pot with a 50/50 mix of potting soil and perlite or coarse sand. Insert the stripped cutting 3ā4 cm deep. Water lightly ā just enough to moisten ā then cover loosely with a clear plastic bag to trap humidity. Check every few days. Do not overwater. Roots establish in 4ā6 weeks.
| Method | Roots In | Success Rate | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Water | 3ā5 weeks | Good | Watching progress |
| Soil + humidity dome | 4ā6 weeks | Higher | Long term health |
š§ The biggest mistake at this stage: overwatering. Rosemary cuttings rot very quickly in soggy conditions. Moist is fine. Wet is death.
Step 03 ā Sun, Air and Tough Love

Once rooted and showing new growth ā usually a tiny flush of bright green at the tips ā move your rosemary to its permanent home. And here is where you need to be firm with it.
Rosemary needs full sun. Not bright indirect. Not near a window. In the sun. As much as you can give it ā 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight minimum every single day.
This is the number one reason rosemary fails indoors. People treat it like a shade herb. It is not. It comes from the sun-baked hillsides of the Mediterranean and it needs that same intensity to thrive. A south-facing balcony or rooftop in Karachi or Lahore is absolutely ideal.
Good airflow matters almost as much as light. Rosemary is susceptible to powdery mildew and root rot in stagnant humid conditions. An open window nearby, or growing it outdoors part of the time, keeps it healthy and vigorous.
Water deeply but infrequently ā only when the top 4ā5 cm of soil is completely dry. Then water thoroughly until it drains from the bottom. Never let it sit in water. The roots must dry out between waterings.
| Care | Requirement |
|---|---|
| āļø Sunlight | 6ā8 hrs direct sun daily ā non-negotiable |
| š§ Watering | Only when top 4ā5 cm is bone dry |
| š¬ļø Airflow | Good ventilation always |
| š”ļø Temperature | 15ā30°C ā handles Pakistani winters well |
| šŖ“ Pot | Terracotta with drainage ā always |
| š± Soil | 50% potting mix + 50% perlite or sand |
Step 04 ā Harvest, Use and Watch It Grow for Years

Start harvesting once your plant is at least 15ā20 cm tall and has plenty of stems. Always cut from the tips ā the top 5ā10 cm of each stem. Never cut into the old woody brown base of the plant ā it will not regenerate from there.
Regular harvesting is actually good for rosemary. It keeps the plant bushy, compact, and producing new tender growth constantly. A neglected rosemary that is never trimmed becomes leggy and woody with sparse growth at the tips.
In the kitchen:
- š Fresh sprigs under roasted chicken or lamb skin
- š„ Chopped finely over roasted potatoes with olive oil and salt
- š Pressed into focaccia dough before baking
- ā One sprig steeped in hot water with honey ā rosemary tea
For hair:
- Simmer 3ā4 sprigs in 500ml water for 20 minutes
- Cool completely
- Use as a final rinse after washing hair
- Or infuse in olive or coconut oil for 2ā4 weeks for a scalp oil
For home:
- Small bundles hung in wardrobes repel moths naturally
- A sprig in a vase of water fills a room with fragrance for days
- Dried and bundled for gifting ā beautiful and useful
šæ Rosemary gets better with age. A three-year-old rosemary plant is a completely different thing from a first-year cutting. The stems thicken, the fragrance intensifies, the plant becomes architectural and structural. Give it time. It rewards patience more than almost any other herb.
Why Does My Rosemary Keep Dying?
Rosemary looks tough but has a few very specific ways it wants to be treated. Get these wrong and it declines fast.
| Problem | Real Cause | The Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Sudden wilting and death | Root rot from overwatering | Well-draining soil, water far less |
| Grey powdery coating on leaves | Powdery mildew from poor airflow | Move outdoors or near open window |
| Leggy with bare woody stems | Not enough light | Full direct sun, 6+ hours |
| Yellowing leaves | Overwatering or waterlogged soil | Let dry completely, check drainage |
| Not growing | Root bound or needs repotting | Move to pot 5 cm larger each spring |
| Dying after repotting | Root disturbance shock | Minimal root disturbance, water lightly |
