How to Grow

Start seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before last frost, sowing ½ inch deep in warm, rich compost mix (keep at 75–85°F for best germination). Plant outside when evening temperatures are consistently at least 65°F. Transplant seedlings 18–24 inches apart in fertile, well-draining loamy soil (pH 5.5–7.0). Lay black plastic mulch before planting to warm the soil and retain heat. Support larger plants with a stake or cage. Wait to feed until after the plant has flowered and set fruit — earlier feeding boosts leaf growth, not fruit. Harvest when fruits are glossy and firm, before the skin starts to dull — regular harvesting encourages the plant to produce more fruits.
