Gomphrena globosa
A cheerful, heat-defying little powerhouse with perfectly round, clover-like blooms in vivid shades of purple, pink, red, orange, and white. American gardeners have relied on its pleasing gumball flowers since the early 1700s, and for good reason β the more you cut it, the more it blooms, and when dried, the flowers hold onto their colour indefinitely. Virtually maintenance-free, pest-resistant, and stunning fresh or dried.

Full Sun (6β8 hours minimum; thrives in heat and intense sun)
Moderate β keep evenly moist until established; once established, gomphrena is somewhat drought tolerant but prefers regular water for optimal flowering; keep plants evenly moist but not soggy; always water at soil level, never overhead
70β90 days from seed to first bloom; blooms continuously from early summer to frost
Start seeds indoors 6β8 weeks before last frost on a heat mat (soil temp 70β75Β°F) β soak seeds for a day or two before sowing to speed up germination, as gomphrena can be slow to germinate. Sow ΒΌ inch deep and transplant outdoors after all frost danger has passed and soil is warm. Space plants 9β18 inches apart depending on variety. Pinch seedlings when they are about six inches tall, just above a set of leaves β this promotes branching and a fuller plant with more globe-like flowers. Harvest deep into the plant, down to 1β2 sets of leaves from the bottom, to stimulate more growth and lower branching.
Germination (10β15 days)
Seeds sprout slowly; use a heat mat and pre-soak seeds to improve germination rate
Seedling (3β4 weeks)
First true leaves appear; keep warm β cool conditions slow growth significantly
Vegetative (3β4 weeks)
Stems and oval deep-green leaves fill out; pinch at 6 inches for bushier plants
Budding (1β2 weeks)
Round, papery globe-shaped bracts emerge at stem tips in vibrant colours
Full Bloom (Ongoing)
Balls of colour bloom non-stop; cut regularly to encourage more flushes until frost
